Even if installing flooring made of wood in a damp environment is possible, you should be aware that doing so is at your peril. In order to prevent damage to the floor, a few considerations need to be brought to your attention, and you will need to exercise a specific degree of awareness and care.

If you want to install timber flooring in a moist region, you must be ready to comply with the recommendations and safety measures that are presented in the following section.

In Any And All Wetter Areas

You are only allowed to put a hardwood floor with a lacquer finish. The AU Building Code stipulates that the substrate must comply with its criteria. Similarly, the flooring needs to be appropriately laid, with no significant spaces left between the boards. At all times, the space must have adequate ventilation; thus, we strongly suggest adding an extractor fan. The care instructions specify the degree of humidity that must be maintained at all times. It is recommended that a waterproof silicone be used to seal the flooring around the perimeter. Water-resistant PVA glue has to be utilised to secure the plank joints in the timber flooring. To prevent any damage to the timber flooring, any surface water or spills should be cleaned up within an hour of their occurrence.

Around Baths & Showers

Putting a broad strip of tiles around bath and shower facilities is a good idea to protect the timber flooring from most splashes or puddles. This may be done by installing tiles throughout the perimeter of the space. Any spills or surface water must be prevented from running into the flooring. If you decide to install timber flooring immediately next to a shower, the shower itself has to have a good base and door with a seal so that water does not leak onto the flooring.

If you decide to put timber flooring directly beneath or adjacent to a bath, you must ensure that any water not contained within the bath is kept to a minimum. It is necessary to clean up any surface water or spills within one hour of their occurrence. It is advised that an absorbent bath mat be placed in places immediately adjacent to showers or bathtubs. Immediately following usage, the bath mat has to be hung up so that it may air dry (not left sitting on the floor when wet).

Maintenance

Because prolonged contact with water or moisture can cause the surface coating to wear more quickly, it is more probable that the surface coating of timber flooring in wet regions will require refinishing more frequently than the surface coating of timber flooring in non-wet locations. Please get in touch with us if you need assistance with the refinishing.

Warnings

If the instructions mentioned are not adhered to, the timber floor may sustain damage beyond repair. If there is a significant leak or a flood, it is quite possible that the hardwood flooring will experience damage that cannot be repaired.
